Sleep Apnea: Know the Facts

, by Dina Reid, 1 min reading time

Did you know that sleep apnea impacts 100,000,000 people world-wide with 5.4 million of that total being in Canada? Sleep apnea is such a prevalent disorder that I, Eddie the Yeti, am trying to de-stigmatize. We spend 1/3 of our life sleeping so why not make the most of it! Keep reading to find out some facts about sleep apnea and how it can affect your day-to-day life.

What Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most common type of sleep‑related breathing disorder. It happens when the airway becomes blocked during sleep, causing breathing to slow down or stop briefly.

When this occurs, sleep is disrupted—often without you realizing it. Your body works harder to restart breathing, pulling you out of deep, restful sleep and leaving you feeling tired the next day.

Common Signs and Symptoms

You may have sleep apnea if you experience:

  • Loud or frequent snoring
  • Gasping or choking during sleep
  • Daytime fatigue or low energy
  • Poor concentration or memory
  • Irritability or low mood
  • High blood pressure

Why Treatment Matters

When left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of:

  • High blood pressure and heart disease
  • Irregular heartbeat or stroke
  • Weight gain and diabetes
  • Worsening memory and concentration

The good news? Effective treatment can greatly improve sleep quality, energy levels, and overall health.
