5 Habits to Improve Sleep Apnea

5 Habits to Improve Sleep Apnea

, by Dina Reid, 1 min reading time

Hi, I’m Eddie the Yeti—and I have sleep apnea.
Over time, I’ve learned a few simple habits that can help improve sleep apnea symptoms and make days feel a little easier. If you’re hoping for better sleep (and better energy), these tips may help.

Eddie’s Top 5 Healthy Sleep Habits

1. Stay active
Regular movement supports overall health and can improve breathing. Even gentle exercise helps build healthy daytime habits that carry into better breathing during sleep.

2. If you smoke, consider quitting
Smoking can irritate and swell the airway, making breathing harder at night. Cutting back—or quitting altogether—can help reduce sleep apnea symptoms and improve sleep quality.

3. Limit alcohol, especially before bed
Alcohol relaxes the throat muscles, which can worsen breathing problems during sleep. For people with sleep apnea, this can lead to more frequent breathing pauses.

4. Try side‑sleeping
Sleeping on your back can allow your airway to collapse more easily. Many people find sleeping on their side or stomach helps reduce symptoms.

5. Be cautious with sleeping pills
Some sleep medications relax the throat muscles and can make breathing interruptions last longer. If you’re struggling with sleep, it’s best to talk to your healthcare provider about safe options.

Making small changes can add up to better sleep over time. Try a few of these habits and see what works best for you.

Sleep well,
